Loren J. Samons II is Vice President for Strategic Initiatives, Executive Director of ACG’s Institute for the Hellenic Culture and the Liberal Arts and Professor of Classical Studies at Boston University.

Citizenship Earned: A Lesson More Important than Democracy

When moderns think of ancient Greek politics they almost invariably cite democracy and government by popular vote as the greatest gift the Hellenes bequeathed to the modern world. Professor Samons argues that this view is both historically inaccurate and demonstrably dangerous and that it has led to a number of political problems faced in contemporary western regimes.
